For conspicuous gallantry and skill in his squadron’s strategic planning in the late campaign in Flander.

Commandant DKE, M.C., SPA 124 Jeanne d’arc

Commandant DKE of the French Air Service is commended as a trusted ally and friend of His Majesty and for his steadfast leadership. For conspicuous gallantry as the leading allied bomber in a single day of the late campaign in Flanders.

Flight Lieutenant Krueger, 1st Aerial Battalion, Royal Naval Air Service.

F/Lt. Krueger receives commendation for his prowess as a bomber, leading his squadron for a single day total.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Martyn, 1st Aerial Battalion, Royal Naval Air Service

F/S-Lt. Martyn is recognized for his skill as the squadron’s leading pilot without prior operational experience in the late campaign.

MILITARY CROSS

Lieutenant Wailwulf, 1st Aerial Battalion, Royal Flying Corps.

Lt. Wailwulf is recognized for his steady improvement as a bomber, which was demonstrated with his destruction of multiple targets of strategic importance in a single sortie.

Second Lieutenant Derring, 1st Aerial Battalion, Royal Flying Corps.

2nd Lt. Derring receives commendation for his Trojan service during the late campaign as an escort to the Beaver Bombers. His skill and bravery allowed the bombers under his protection to receive their targets successfully and return home safely.

“HIS MAJESTY THE KING has graciously pleased to confer the undermentioned Rewards on Officers of the Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Flying Corps, in recognition of gallantry in Operations against the Enemy:-

VICTORIA CROSS

Lieutenant Smoke, D.S.O., M.C., 1st Aerial Battalion

For most conspicuous gallantry on active service in France. During the late successful campaign on the Western Front, Lieutenant Smoke downed sixty-one enemy aircraft, destroying eighteen in one day, and destroyed sixty-two targets of strategic value to the enemy. Lieutenant Smoke’s skill and daring proved decisive to the success of the 1st Aerial Battalion and marked him as the leading aviator, both Allied and enemy, of the late campaign.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS

Flight Lieutenant Stefanik, 1st Aerial Battalion

F/Lt. Stefanik downed twenty-one enemy aircraft during the late campaign, the majority of which were bombers intent on visiting harm on His Majesty’s forces during their critical offensive in France. F/Lt. Stefanik’s consistent efforts marked him as the leading junior officer in the 1st Aerial Battalion and fourth amongst all pilots.

Warrant Officer CamelJock, 1st Aerial Battalion

Arriving at the front well into the campaign, WO1 CamelJock has consistently demonstrated precision bombing skills wrecking havoc on enemy targets, destroying eleven targets in four days, and contributing greatly to the success of His Majesty’s forces and the effectiveness of his squadron.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Phule, 1st Aerial Battalion

In his first campaign of active service against His Majesty’s enemies, F/Sub-Lt. Phule proved his skill and calm under enemy fire to destroy twenty-three targets of strategic importance and down four enemy aircraft - the leading score of pilots in their first campaign in his squadron.

MILITARY CROSS

Commandant DKE, SPA 124 Jeanne d’arc

Commandant DKE of the French Air Service is commended as a trusted ally and friend of His Majesty and for his steadfast leadership. Commandant DKE also exhibited heroism and skill in the air, destroying forty-three targets and downing nine enemy aircraft.

Capitaine Lucien, SPA 124 Jeanne d’arc

An experienced and courageous airman, Capt. Lucien proved a clinical bomber, destroying thirty-seven enemy targets in addition to ten enemy aircraft over the skies of Flanders. In one notable action on the 26th March, Capt. Lucien destroyed eight targets, including two enemy aerodromes.

Sous-Lieutenant LaTour, SPA 124 Jeanne d’arc

A dependable ally and skilled officer, Sous-Lieutenant LaTour proved his keen skill and courage in aerial combat by accounting for the destruction of thirty-eight enemy aircraft. LaTour also demonstrated his abilities as a bomber, destroying fourteen targets, most memorably three enemy aerodromes on the 20th May.

Lieutenant Hook, 1st Aerial Battalion

A reliable and skilled officer of first rank, Lt. Hook proved his skill and consistency throughout the late campaign in France. Lt. Hook downed 21 enemy aircraft and account for the destruction of twenty-three targets of strategic importance. Lt. Hook is depended upon by his fellow pilots as a determined wingman in a dogfight, who has saved many a comrade from death in the skies above Flanders.

Captain Warren, 1st Aerial Battalion

A distinguished and experienced officer whose steady nerve and tactical expertise has proved invaluable to his squadron. Capt. Warren destroyed twenty-six enemy aircraft and accounted for twenty-six enemy targets during the late campaign in a demonstration of consistent excellence.

Major Hatter, 1st Aerial Battalion

Major Hatter’s determination as a squadron commander is reflected in his recording the destruction of targets on the 23rd April, Major Hatter’s efforts led a successful counterattack during the late campaign in France, following earlier losses against superior enemy forces.

Flight Sub-Lieutenant DarinMason, 1st Aerial Battalion receives mention for his consistent contribution as a skilled bomber during his first campaign of active operations against the enemy.

Flight Lieutenant Kruger, 1st Aerial Battalion is commended for downing five enemy aircraft over the skies of Flanders on the 26th March.

Lieutenant Knuckleballer, 1st Aerial Battalion receives mention for his determination and gallantry as a new flight leader during active operations against the enemy.

Flight Commander Colslaw, 1st Aerial Battalion is commended for his service to his squadron in insuring the constant supply of active pilots and more generally to the smooth running of the unit during active operations against the enemy.

Captain Flame, 1st Aerial Battalion is brought to the attention of Headquarters for assuming leadership of the squadron when his Commanding Officer was incapacitated in addition to the sterling example he sets for the men under his command during active operations.

HIS MAJESTY THE KING has graciously pleased to approve of the appointment of the undermentioned Officers to be Companions of the DISTINGUISHED SERVICE ORDER, in recognition of their gallantry and devotion to duty in the field:-

Flight Commander Vicar, 1st Aerial Battalion, Royal Flying Corps

For conspicuous gallantry in leading his squadron through the dramatic loss of it’s Commanding Officer and other senior officers during the late Red Baron World League campaign. Flt. Cdr. Vicar demonstrated his unquestionable skill as a leader of men, by banding together the remaining pilots in the face of overwhelming odds. Flt. Cdr. Vicar did not merely restore the squadron to its full compliment, but built it into an elite unit, whose fighting spirit was demonstrated by finishing the late campaign with two victories against overwhelming odds. Flt. Cdr. Vicar’s continued good humour and exertions define the finest traditions of the 1st Aerial Battalion.
